Burns Night......

Well it's Burns night on Sunday - a celebration of the life and poetic verse of Robert "Rabbie" Burns who died in 1796 in poverty at the young age of 37.

The first gatherings to celebrate the life and works of Robert Burns were held by a group of his friends on the anniversary of his death on 21 July. In the early 1800s the first Burns Clubs were set up with Burns Night celebrations the focus of their year.

So tonight the men are off to the very formal Burns Supper here in town which is actually a club and the event is held every year by invitation only.

The ladies (us) my mum and lots of our friends are off out to have a meal and enjoy each others company.
I am really looking forward to it as my friend Alison is coming up from Edinburgh - her dad and husband are going to the Burns Supper. She is taking her new baby with her and I can't wait to see the gorgeous Zoe.

I leave you with a wee excerpt (for those of you who can understand it!!! LOL) of the famous poem by Rabbie Burns "To A Mouse":

Wee sleekit, cow'rin, tim'rous beastie,
O, what a panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an chase thee,
Wi murdering pattle!

But Mousie, thou art no thy lane,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best-laid schemes o mice an men
Gang aft agley,
An lea'e us nought but grief an pain,
For promis'd joy!............................

See you all tomorrow!!!

Hi Dawn, Yes it is me! Love your blog. Dave found it last night and we are both highly impressed. Thanks from him for the tips on image downloads.
Hope you had a great night out. Not been to a Burns night since Dave left the RAF. They had great ones and included the ladies.Coming from Ayrshire I love The Bards work. We had so much of it in primary school.Alloway is my favourite place. Claire and Mike had their honeymoon at THe Brig O Doon in Alloway. She loved me reading Tam O Shanter to her when she was wee, even though she was raised in England she understood the doric as I lapse into it often, lol.I used to be able to recite reams of Burns but got out of the habit now.An old Scotsman who lived here gave me a 2nd Edition of the collected works years ago. He said he had no-one to pass it onto and knew I would appreciate it.I do!
Love, Mayxx

Hi Dawn! My mother was from Scotland - Ayr in fact and lived there until she married my Dad. That Burn's poem was one of her favorites and I loved it when she would read this particular one to me. You brought a tear to my eye when I saw it here. I understand it perfectly! Hugs Jeanette
